Going Green
The Hot New Buzz Word in Real Estate.
Renewable woods, low emission paints, eco friendly,
xeriscape, low flush, low-E, repurpose, refurbish and the list goes on and
on.
Going Green is a hot new trend and people love to jump on a new
trend. But how does one go about "being" green and more importantly
WHEN to be green. One of my last transactions in Las Vegas was for a
"earth friendly couple". The home they choose was a very nice home
with a remodel that was only six months old. New cabinets and hardwood
flooring throughout. The couple looked around and said the first thing
that would have to be changed was the cabinets and flooring... it had to be
earth friendly. So I asked what would happen to what they were taking
out. They said everything being taken out would be thrown away.
This is one of the few times that I actually laughed in a clients face.
New materials being thrown away to replace with green materials.. somewhat
defeating the purpose.
Going Green can be a good thing and in many
cases can add resale value to your home. But just when to go green is
the question. Go Green when dealing with major renovations, rebuilds or
remodels. This is the perfect time to select eco-friendly materials. Energy
saving appliances can be changed out at anytime in addition to water saving
fixtures.
Also, when considering any type of major home
improvement take time to attend some open houses in your neighborhood.
Check out the competition, the one thing that you do not want to do is over
improve.
